Lore & Background
Bartel Stannard has no background in the Dark Tower series. The claim that he was a police officer from New York City is entirely invented. In The Drawing of the Three, Roland draws only Eddie Dean and Odetta Holmes (later Susannah Dean) from Earth; there is no third recruit. Odetta survives and becomes Susannah Dean, not dying in any ambush alongside a character named Stannard. Any story involving Stannard is fan-created and not part of the official canon.
In Their Own Story
The desert wind tasted like copper and old dust. Bartel Stannard adjusted his grip on the revolver Roland had given him, his eyes scanning the dunes for movement. He missed the sirens of New York, the predictable rhythm of city life where bad men could be caught or shot without magic intervening. Here, the shadows seemed to breathe. Beside him, Odetta whispered a prayer, her voice barely audible over the howling gale. Bartel looked at Roland's back, the man who had pulled them from death into this new kind of living. He knew he was out of his depth, but for the first time in years, he felt purpose. Then the sand shifted ahead, and the shadows detached themselves from the dunes.
Reader's Guide
Former New York cop Bartel Stannard joins Roland Deschain's ka-tet after being pulled from his world by the magic of the Door. He represents the fractured law enforcement of Earth, seeking purpose beyond the corruption he witnessed in his previous life. His arc is defined by a desperate search for redemption and loyalty to the Gunslinger. Stannard possesses combat skills honed during his police career, making him a capable fighter with firearms. However, the harsh reality of Mid-World overwhelms him quickly. He struggles to adapt to the supernatural threats that far exceed anything he faced on Earth streets. His defining moment occurs when Roland selects him from the crowd in New York, marking the start of his journey toward the Dark Tower. Ultimately, Stannard's sacrifice highlights the perilous nature of the quest. He falls during an early ambush by monstrous creatures in the Wastelands alongside Odetta Holmes. His death serves as a grim reminder that not all who are chosen survive the journey to the end. Despite his short tenure, he remains part of Roland's expanding family.
