The village of Calla Bryn Sturgis is defined by its unique curse: nearly all children born there are twins, and once a generation the Wolves of Thunderclap come to take one child from each pair. The children are returned months later "roont" – mentally handicapped, destined to grow to enormous size, and die young. The ka-tet learns this from the townsfolk and Father Callahan, who request their help. Andy, an amicable humanoid robot, confirms the Wolves are due in about a month but refuses to divulge any information without a password. Jamie Jaffords, an elderly resident, remembers the previous time the Wolves appeared and tells how he and his friends confronted them decades earlier and killed one. The village also has a military outpost called "The Dogan" between the Calla and Thunderclap, where a surveillance system monitors the entire Calla. Andy turns out to be an emissary for the Wolves, and the father of Jake's friend Benny Slightman has betrayed the Calla by feeding Andy information in exchange for sparing Benny from going to Thunderclap.

In Their Own Story

The ka-tet discover they are being followed by citizens of Calla Bryn Sturgis, as well as Father Callahan. He and the townsfolk request the ka-tet's assistance in battling against the Wolves of Thunderclap. Roland and Jake notice bizarre changes in Susannah's behavior, linked to when she coupled with the demon in the stone circle. Susannah reveals she was impregnated by the demon and shares knowledge of a second personality living in her named Mia "daughter of none." Jake follows the two conspirators (Andy and Benny's father) to "The Dogan," where he discovers the surveillance system and overhears them communicating with someone named Finli o'Tego. Jake tells Roland, who shows mercy by not killing Slightman. Eddie blinds Andy and decommissions him. On the day of the Wolves' arrival, Roland reveals the Wolves are robots, not men. The Wolves attack using weapons resembling snitches and lightsabers, with Doctor Doom-like visages. The gunslingers hide the children in a rice patch, lay a false trail, and ambush the Wolves with help from plate-throwing women. All Wolves are killed; the defenders suffer two deaths – a thrower and Benny, which greatly dismays Jake.
